My Top Free Non-Marketing Applications
By Ho’okani Higa
I was thinking the other day about how computers have changed our lives and really how much they are integrated into our daily activities. Can you believe that there are some youngsters out there that have not lived without computers not to mention fax machines, cell phones, pagers and other great pieces of technology that make our lives a whole lot easier or for some a whole lot more complicated.
For those of us marketing on the internet we must not forget that our computer is the key tool for us to succeed and we need to take care of it. I have a small list of non-marketing applications that I use to keep my computer going and at the same time making it a little more user friendly. By no means is this an exhaustive list, in fact it is a very minimal list but are some of the key applications that I use constantly and find very useful. Most of you may already know and have most of these apps but if you don’t I hope that you’ll find them just as useful and you just can’t beat the price – FREE. Enjoy.
Syncback
Syncback is a free backup utility that is actually a very powerful backup and synchronization program and everything you need in a backup utility. It is definitely just as good as commercial software costing hundreds of dollars if not better than most of them. You can download this great utility at http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html
Filezilla
Most of you probably have heard of or use this FTP utility. I have found that out of all the FTP programs I have used, this has to be the most user friendly. You just have to try it to see for yourself. Download it here at http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/
CCleaner
CCleaner (crap cleaner) helps keep you computer running better by automatically cleaning out files that tend to build up when surfing the net. It cleans out your temp files and a bunch of other default directories that you can chose. It also gives you the option of adding directories to clean out when you run the app. It’ll help you with cookie control, application history and other helpful things. One thing that I like is that is has a built in registry cleaner also. Download it here at http://www.ccleaner.com/
Clipboard Magic
Clipboard Magic is one of the better windows clipboard extension utilities. As you copy text it’ll archive it in a list and if you ever want to paste that text again you just open Clipboard Magic from the task bar, highlight whatever text you want and paste it where you need it. And it has the ability to let you set up multiple lists if you had the need to save stuff you paste all the time. Great time saver. Get it here at http://www.cyber-matrix.com/clipmag.html
Spybot-S&D/Ad-aware
Everyone should know about and have these two spyware removal utilities. I won’t get into what they do but just tell you to get them and use them regularly. Spybot can be found here at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html and Ad-aware can be found here at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
dBPowerampConvert
For those of you into music files, this great little app is a must for converting music files. It does the standard mp3, wma, cda and such but you can also get more plugins for additional file types (free also). It is user friendly and relatively quick. Look aroun the site for some additional good free stuff that I didn’t mention here. Get it here at http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm
Gsplit
Gsplit is a powerful file spliting utility which is useful if you want to send a file thru email but is too large to do so. This utility will split the file into sizes that you can specify and will create a self uniting tool that automatically puts the split file back together. I’ve tried a few different utilities in this category but found this one to be the best. You can get it at http://www.gdgsoft.com/download/gsplit.aspx
Launchmate
Launchmate is a great utility for clearing up desktop clutter. It gives you the ability to put all your desktop shortcuts into an auto-hide toolbar which you can place at the top or side of your screen. The auto-hide feature makes it so you don’t see the toolbar unless you hover your pointer over the toolbar area. The toolbar is customizable so you can catagorize your shortcuts that are put on the toolbar. Go to the site for full info on this great little app. http://tdrware.virtualave.net/lmfeat.htm
Audacity
Once again for those who like to edit music, Audacity has to be most full featured free audio editing application. You can pretty much do all necessary basic editing functions. I won’t lie and tell you that it is equal to the expensive editing programs out there, but it is no slouch either. It you don’t want to spend the hundreds of dollars for a commercial editor, then Audacity is the next best thing. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about.php
MIR.net
MIR.net is a handy application for the batch resizing of images. This is great when you need to take high res images and resize them to send through email or uploading to a website. Instead of having to do it one image at a time, now you can do it all in one go. Check it out at http://www.acumensystems.com/mir/
TClockEx
TClockEx is an handy enhancement to the windows taskbar clock and allows you to do all sort of customization to the clock. You can display the date, time in different formats, change the fonts and colors and all sorts of other things. It has a built in month view calender that you can show by a simple right click and you can copy the current date to the clipboard by double clicking on the clock. Just one of those useful things that you don’t really think about. Find it here at http://www.rcis.co.za/dale/tclockex/index.htm
There you have it. Some of very useful free applications that I use in my everyday computing. You may or may not find them useful but for me, they are great additions to my start menu. Until next time, happy computing.
